In 1955, Lincoln dropped the Cosmopolitan designation, and it was replaced by the Custom as the less expensive series.
The same body style lineup was maintained, but the engine size was increased to 341 cubic inches producing 225 horsepower. This engine would be used for this year only.
The Hydramatic transmission was dropped and Lincoln introduced its own automatic transmission for the first time: Turbo-Drive, a three-speed, which contained a “Park” feature for the first time. (Hydramatics are placed into “park” by putting the transmission into reverse after the ignition is turned off). Dual exhaust became standard for the first time.
Another first this year was the “Multi-Luber” system, which allowed the driver to lubricate the chassis, suspension and steering systems by pushing a button on the dash.
A total of 27,222 units were produced, and the Capri two-door hardtop continued to be the most popular, with a production run of 11,462 units. The convertible weighed 4,415 pounds and sold for $4,072.00.
Check out other years!
